Volunteers rolled bread dough in an effort to raise more money for their 2 Million Penny Drive.

Easter Seals of the Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, in collaboration with the Great Harvest Bread Company, sold loaves of bread Monday at their Baker of the Day event to raise money for the 2 Million Penny Drive. The bread company provided its facilities and products to support the event.

Eight volunteers baked 200 loaves of bread consisting of honey whole wheat, old-fashioned white, cinnamon raisin white and Oregon herb. The annual Golden Loaf Award was given to Boardman resident Robert Franczkowski for donating the most money for one loaf of bread. He bought an old-fashioned white loaf for $25. This is his second year he received the loaf award. Franczkowski purchased a loaf last year for $100.

The event raised $1,000 and all monies will go toward the 2 Million Penny Drive. This year’s profit was $1,500 less than what was raised last year, but Easter Seals’ Jodi Harmon is optimistic about the remaining days left in the drive.

“We did well, I just think everybody is trying to cut back due to the economy,” she said. “I expect our penny drive to pick up.”

Penny the pig will travel to various locations until Aug. 26 collecting money that will be used for Easter Seals programs and services.
