Neighbors | Submitted.Canfield Little Cardinals football signups for the 2010 season continue this Sunday at McCune Park.

When the Canfield Little Cardinals 100-pound team hits the field this fall, it will have a coach who knows all about football success.

Jason Marucci, who won two college football national championships as a member of the Miami Hurricanes, is taking over as the new coach of the 7 and 8-year-old squad. The former Boardman High School star is excited about the opportunity to mentor Canfield’s youth.

“Canfield has great equipment and it is a great program,” said Marucci. “We are in a new league this year, which is a big plus.”

Marucci was a member of Boardman’s 1987 state runner-up football team and is a Hall of Fame member at Boardman. He was a three-year letterman at the University of Miami, where he played from 1989 to 1992. The Hurricanes won national titles in 1989 and 1991.

The coach is hoping the Little Cards will draw plenty of young football players this fall. League sign-ups are continuing this weekend in person and online.

Registration is open for the 100-pound, 120-pound and 140-pound teams. Tom Donadee will return as the 120-pound head coach and John French will lead the 140-pound team.

There will be a late registration Sunday from noon to 2 p.m. at McCune Park in the administration building. Parents need to bring a birth certificate to late registration.

To be eligible to play, kids must live in the Canfield Local School District. Home-schooled students are also eligible.

Parents can also register their children online at www.canfieldlittlecardinals.com. The schedule, calendar and additional information can also be found online.
