Tyrell Ravnell

Police have arrested a man in a shooting death in the Kirwan housing project.

Detective Sgt. John Rusnak said Tuesday that Tyrell Ravnell, 19, of Halleck Street in Youngstown is in the city jail without bond until his arraignment Friday morning in Campbell Municipal Court.

Rusnak said police believe Ravnell acted alone.

Christian Blackshear, 19, of Wirt Street in Youngstown was found dead on a sidewalk on Jackson Street in the Kirwan homes at 12:05 a.m. Sunday. Police said he was shot in the head with an AK-47 as he walked to his car.

Rusnak said that after an interview with Blackshear’s mother, he believes Blackshear was visiting relatives in the housing project.

He said police have not uncovered a motive in their investigation, adding that the shooter possibly mistook Blackshear for someone else.

Police have not recovered the weapon.

Rusnak said they were able to make an arrest quickly thanks to cooperation from residents and assistance from other agencies, including Youngstown Metropolitan Housing Authority and the county’s violent crimes task force.

Clifford Scott, director of YMHA, said the authority will pay for increased police patrols at the Kirwan project.
