From 2009 to now, very little about the Trumbull County Fair has changed, and that’s the way Richard Roscoe, fair board president, likes it.

At a time when the Internet, Facebook and Twitter keep many people focused on the new, the fair is more interested in the old.

The Historical Village Association of Trumbull County, for example, will offer an exhibit of postcards dating back to the 1800s and old-fashioned penny candies, including Bull’s Eyes, Mary Janes and Fireballs.

The same animal-showing events will fill the schedule in just the same way that they have for decades.

In fact, Roscoe said he’s been told that the number of members of 4-H has climbed this year.

“When you have a good market, you keep it,” Roscoe said of the 164th annual agricultural event that runs Tuesday through July 4 at the fairgrounds at the corner of Hoagland Blackstub and Everett Hull roads.

“They like mud and noise,” Roscoe said of the motor-based entertainment that takes center stage most nights.

From school bus and compact-car races Tuesday night to auto races Wednesday and Thursday, truck and tractor pulls Friday and Saturday and the demolition derby Sunday, the fair will stick close to its fan base this year, Roscoe said.

Last year’s attendance was down about 2,000 from the previous year as a result of poor weather on Tuesday and Wednesday, but postponing motorized events and moving them to Sunday resulted in a big turnout Sunday, Roscoe said.

Fair admission is $7 again this year after rising to $8 in 2008.

Admission prices: daily ticket, $7 (includes rides); senior citizens $3; weekly pass, $18 (does not include rides, which cost an additional $4 daily); children up to age 2 are free.
