Don’t give up on our young folks

Don’t give up on our young folks

My husband and I had worked all day outside in the heat and a quick supper would answer our need. We pulled into Taco Bell on Route 224, and groaned, as we felt our car lean to the left with a flat tire. Upon hearing of our plight, a young woman, her own food in hand, offered to drive us to any place for help. We thanked her and declined — then a young male employee bounded out of the store, asked where the jack and spare were, dropped to his knees and soon had our donut in place.

I told him I would like to take him home and keep him. He grinned a wholesome grin and kept on working. I asked if he were a farm boy. “No, I just love working on cars.” (He had clocked out of his work shift and said he wouldn’t even consider leaving two oldies in our 80s (we had informed him of our age) in such a predicament.) He also refused our offer of remuneration.

This letter is a thankful tribute to not only the first young lady (no name) and “Jordon,” our benefactor, but also to their parents, who surely have done all the right things to have raised such fine young adults. We hold in high esteem this young man who left us with a grin, brushed off his black uniform, wiped his brow, washed up and returned to his shift at Taco Bell.

They both made our day.

Your pet might be safer at home

As the days get hotter and more humid it seems that some pet owners take leave of their senses. In the past week I have seen three dogs left alone in cars in parking lots with the windows open a few inches. One was outside a restaurant, another at a bank and the third was at a grocery store.

The interior of a car parked in the sun on a sunny day can reach 130 degrees in a few minutes, and animals left inside can quickly die of heat stroke. As an experiment, sit in your car in the summer heat with the windows cracked and you will experience what your dog is feeling.

If you truly love your pet, leave him home while you run errands. You can take him for a ride to the dog park later.
