IUP hikes tuition 5 percent on some grad programs

INDIANA, Pa. (AP) — Some graduate students at one western Pennsylvania university are going to have to pay a little more for their advanced degrees.

Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the largest of Pennsylvania’s 14 state-owned schools, is adding a 5 percent tuition differential to the cost of four doctoral programs and eight master’s programs.

The tuition bump is possible under a 2008 policy change that allows State System of Higher Education schools to adjust the cost of graduate degrees to reflect costs and demand.

University officials say budget woes prompted the decision to raise tuition on programs including the clinical psychology doctoral and MBA programs.

A state system spokesman says he knows of no other state schools that have utilized the tuition differential policy change.
