A 19-year-old man was fatally shot at 12:05 a.m. Sunday by what city police believe was an AK-47 automatic rifle.

Christian Blackshear was shot in the face at close range beside a playground in the Kirwan Homes apartment complex.

Witnesses said they saw a person wearing a mask who ran into a garbage can while leaving the area.

Police will be checking for traces of DNA that might determine the shooter’s identity.

Akron Children’s Hospital Beeghly Campus will break ground at 10 a.m. Wednesday for construction of the hospital’s Garden of Hope project.

The garden, nestled in a highly visible, yet enclosed courtyard area, will provide patients, their families and others a comforting place to visit, reflect, heal and find solace, hospital officials say.

The garden, to be fully funded through philanthropic donations, will be interspersed with a stone patio, a waterfall, teak benches, lush landscaping and sculptures.

The patio area in the Garden of Hope will be lined with personalized, engraved pavers designed to remember individuals and families. Each paver will be inscribed as the donor wishes, in honor, in celebration or in memory of a special child or other loved one.
