Jamestown, N.y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored five runs in the first inning and went on to defeat the Jamestown Jammers, 9-2, on Sunday in the finale of their season-opening New York-Penn League series.

The Scrappers (2-1) took advantage of some wild pitching and sloppy defense by Jamestown in the opening frame.

Daniel DeGeorge was hit by a pitch to lead off the game. He later scored the first run on a single by Chase Burnette.

Kevin Fontanez, who followed DeGeorge to the plate and singled, came around to score on a passed ball by Jamestown catcher Wildredo Giminez.

The Scrappers 3-4-5 hitters (Wyatt Toregas, Carlos Moncrief and Giovanny Urshela) reached on a walk, error and walk, respectively, the latter chasing home Burnette to make it 3-0.

Toregas then scored on another passed ball, and Moncrief crossed home on a single by Andrew Kinney.

The Scrappers made it 6-0 in the sixth inning when Jordan Cassas singled with one out and later scored on Fontanez’s first double of the season.

One inning later, Urshela led off with a single, then Kinney walked.

The Jammers then brought Andy Kainer in from the bullpen to relieve John Lambert, and Diego Seastrunk greeted Kainer with a three-run homer to left.

Jamestown scored its runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs. Harold Brantley singled and Wilfredo Giminez followed with his first home run of the season.

The Scrappers play host to the Batavia Muckdogs tonight at 7:05 in the 2010 home opener at Eastwood Field.
