Probe continues into fatal shooting in Campbell

CAMPBELL — Police still are trying to piece together the circumstances around the shooting death of 19-year-old man in the Kirwan homes this weekend.

Campbell Detective Sgt. John Rusnak said Monday that police still did not know why Christian Blackshear, of Wirt Street in Youngstown, was in the housing project when he was shot at 12:05 a.m. Sunday.

He was shot at close range on a sidewalk as he walked to his car near a playground on Monroe Street.

The bullet, from an AK-47, entered his right cheek and exited by his right ear, Rusnak said.

Rusnak said Blackshear was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he was pronounced dead at 12:40 p.m.

Police believe the shooter knocked over a garbage can while he was running away, and they hoped to retrieve a DNA sample from blood and sweat they found on it, Rusnak said.
