Jamestown, N.Y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers tasted defeat for the first time in their young season Saturday night.

The Scrappers (1-1) fell to host Jamestown Jammers 4-0 in the second of the teams’ season-opening three-game series. The Jammers (1-1) can win the series with a victory tonight at 6:05.

The Scrappers had the first baserunner of the game when Giovanny Urshela got a base hit in the first inning. But he was erased when the next batter, Carlos Moncrief, grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Scrappers pitcher Kirk Wetmore retired three of the four hitters he faced in the first inning. But he allowed a walk, which turn into a run thanks to an RBI double by James Wooster.

Wetmore (0-1) allowed four hits and three runs — all earned — in 22/3 innings. He faced 17 batters, walking four and striking out three. His counterpart, Josh Hodges, made up for his five allowed hits by striking out five Scrappers batters.

Pitching was an issue for Mahoning Valley, at least from a command standpoint. The Scrappers gave up seven free passes to the Jammers. But the staff had eight strikeouts and surrendered six hits.

The Jammers pitchers also gave up six hits, but walked only one and also struck out eight. Moncrief earned the walk for the Scrappers.

Jamestown added another pair of runs in the third inning. Wetmore gave up a double, then hit a batter and threw a wild pitch to give the Jammers runners on second and third with one out.

Aaron Senne took advantage and with a base hit to bring the runners home. Wetmore was replaced by Kyle Smith with two outs in the inning.

The Jammers scored again in the seventh inning when Brent Keys stole third base, and advanced home on a wild throw by catcher Moises Montero.
