Dustin Brode is rarely satisfied with how he performed as a thrower for the Canfield High track and field team.

But as a senior, Brode broke records at almost every meet he attended, won a state championship and set the all-time Ohio record in the process. Even Brode could raise an eyebrow after looking at a resume like that.

“Looking back on it now, I always said that I wasn’t happy,” he said. “But looking back on it all, I’m plenty happy. I’ve accomplished a lot.”

Brode led his team in total points — about 240, he said — this season. Considering he competed in only two events — shot put and discus — when his peers had four, Brode’s accomplishments are that much more impressive.

“The year as a whole was amazing,” he said. “And getting this award. It’s a great honor.”

Brode hurled the shot a record 71-feet-7.5 in Columbus. And if the roar coming from his rosin-covered throat wasn’t evidence enough he was pleased, his inability to speak for a few days afterward summed it up.

“It was great,” he said. “Every week I would set a goal, and sometimes I would hit it and sometimes I wouldn’t. But I would make some pretty big jumps here and there, and I’d have milestones to hit for me and my long-term goals.”

Not surprisingly, Brode mentioned several throws he’d like to have back. He said there were a few tosses where he’d have hit close to 73 feet if he hadn’t fouled.

So what goes through his mind on a picture-perfect throw, only to hear an official rule it foul?

“Anger,” he said.

Still, setting records in the district, regional and state, along with several other smaller meets, has put his year in perspective. Brode said he’s actually pleased with the way things turned out.

“It’s a pretty big sense of pride,” he said.
