The city’s latest homicide victim has been identified as Marlon J. Chatman, police reported Friday. Police were called about 4:30 p.m. Thursday afternoon, to 360 West Chalmers Ave., to respond to a shooting.

They found Chatman, 28, in an upstairs bedroom with two gunshot wounds to the leg and a cut over his eye.

Chatman, who did not live in the house, told police that he did not know who shot him.

He was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center, where he later died.

Benefit planned

AUSTINTOWN

A benefit for a Canfield man who died in a work accident is scheduled for Monday at Quaker Steak and Lube in Austintown.

James “Bo” Wetzl, 56, died April 7 in Hudson when a trench collapsed on him and another worker of A. Bagnoli and Sons, an excavating company based in Boardman.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration later said the trench was unsafe.

The family has since set up the James “Bo” Wetzl Memorial Fund, and the benefit at Quaker Steak and Lube, 5800 Interstate Blvd., just off Route 46, will help Wetzl’s family with unexpected expenses.

The benefit begins at 11 a.m. Monday and will continue all day.

YSU designation

YOUNGSTOWN

The Arbor Day Foundation will officially announce Youngstown State University as a Tree Campus USA University on Monday.

This designation will spotlight YSU for its forestry management and environmental responsibility.

The university has about 1,900 trees on its 145-acre campus, and joins four other universities in Ohio and 74 nationwide in this distinction. The announcement will be made at 10 a.m. between the Ward Beecher Planetarium and Maag Library, north of Lincoln Avenue.

Vandalism reported

YOUNGSTOWN

As many as 14 juveniles destroyed a pumpkin patch, set fire to bales of hay and knocked over garbage cans on Sherwood Avenue, according to police. Police were called about the vandalism at 2:17 a.m. Friday in the 900 block of Sherwood. The hay was set on fire in the middle of the street, making it impassable. When officers arrived, the juveniles were gone.

Groundbreaking ceremony planned

POLAND

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Mahoning County Commissioners will have a groundbreaking ceremony for the Struthers South Interceptor Sewer Improvement Project. The ceremony will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Little Red School House in Poland Township.

The $3 million project will include a sanitary interceptor sewer for areas in Poland Township. It will connect directly to the Struthers waste-treatment plant.

Free hot dogs

Youngstown

From June 28 through Aug. 31, weather permitting, Mill Creek MetroParks will have free hot dogs for the public Mondays and Tuesdays. The hot dogs will be served Mondays at the James L. Wick Recreation Area, off McCollum Road, and Tuesdays at Scholl Recreation Area. The hot dogs are sponsored by the Salvation Army’s Mahoning County Services.
