Toregas powers Scrappers to opening-night win

Staff report

Jamestown, N.Y.

The last time Wyatt Toregas was in a Scrappers uniform, he was helping them to a New York-Penn League title.

It’s a pretty safe bet he won’t get that chance this season.

Toregas homered twice and scored three runs, including one in the 10th inning, to help Mahoning Valley beat Jamestown 7-5 in its season opener Friday night at Russell E. Diethrick Jr. Park.

Toregas, a 27-year-old catcher who played 19 games for the Cleveland Indians last summer, homered in the first and fourth innings before adding a single in the 10th. The Scrappers scored three runs in the 10th, benefiting from two errors on the same play.

With two men on, Juan Aponte singled to center, where Brent Keys mishandled the ball, allowing Toregas and Carlos Moncrief to score. Aponte then came home on a throwing error by second baseman Noah Perio after Keys’ relay throw.

Reliever Dale Dickerson gave up one run in the bottom of the 10th but held on for the win. Dickerson pitched three innings of no-hit relief, giving up two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts and two walks.

Designated hitter Andrew Kinney added two hits and scored a run for the Scrappers, who will play Jamestown twice more before heading back for Monday’s home opener against Auburn. Left fielder Kevin Rucker also had two hits.

Michael Rayl started for Mahoning Valley and went 42/3 innings, giving up three runs on five hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

J.D. Goryl pitched 21/3 innings of shutout relief, giving up four hits and one walk for the Scrappers, who advanced to the New York-Penn League championship series last summer before falling to Staten Island in three games.

Toregas, a 24th round pick in 2004, helped the Scrappers to their lone title in his rookie season.

He batted .176 with the Indians last summer, his only major league experience. He started this season with the Class AA Akron Aeros, batting .203 with one homer and six RBIs in 59 at bats.

Perio, Ryan Fisher and Sequoyah Stonecipher each had two hits for Jamestown.

Luis Chirinos got the loss and the blown save, coming on in the top of the ninth with a 4-3 lead before surrendering a run.

He gave up three more in the following inning.
