Track teams break school records

Breaking records and beating out the best of the best was the goal the Austintown Middle School track teams had this season.

Mission accomplished.

The girls Red team and boys Blue team combined to break eight school track records this spring.

Eighth-grader Lauren Bower set a new record of 15.5 in the 100-meter hurdles, Carissa Jenkins broke the 800-meter dash record with a time of 2:33.05. Nathan Bowlen set two new records of 23.6 in the 200 and 53.5 in the 400.

The team didn’t just break individual records. Several relay teams set new standards as well. The new girls 4X400 time to beat is 1:53.9, thanks to Jayme Ritchie, Makaila Barbell, Ebony Davis and Lauren Bower.

For the boys team, Nathan Bowlen, Terry Worrell, Gary Gibson and Terrell McClain beat out two records, including the 4X100 (47.1) and the 4X200 (1:37.9). The 4X400-meter relay squad of Ben Conley, Terry Worrell, Nathan Bowlen and Nick Sheely won the state track meet and set a new record of 3:42.57.

The boys finished the season with a record of 13-0, including winning team titles at the Girard Relays, Austintown Invitational, All-American Conference Championships, Mahoning County Meet and the state championship meet.

The girls won the Mahoning County meet, Austintown Invitational and were runners-up in the All-American Conference Championships.

The Blue teams were coached by Paul Cassano, John Savage, Chris Flauto and Brian Forgac. The Red teams were led by Jackio Ogilvie, Mike Zoccali, Brian Beany and Jeff Gessler.
