Third-graders explore history of Austin Log Cabin

Members of the third-grade classes of Watson, Woodside and Lynn Kirk Elementary schools took a step back in history as they visited the Austin Log Cabin and the Strock Stone House recently.

During their visit to the Austin Log Cabin they found out how a cabin was built, why cabins were built near water, who Austintown is named for, how the Austin Log was named and when the first fourth of July parade was held in Austintown.

When they visited the Strock Stone House, the students were informed about the limestone on the house, how heavy it is and where it came from, shown room with children’s toys, a printing press, old typewriters, an old phone and a bathroom with a claw foot tub.

Both national historic landmarks are open for free tours the first Sunday of every month from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. No reservations are required.

For information about free private tours of the facility, call 330-792-1127.
