Symphonic band kicks off concert series in Canfield

The Youngstown Symphonic Band, under the direction of Paul Rossi and associate conductor William Slocum, will present the first band concert of the summer music series on the Village Green in Canfield Monday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

This concert will mark the 56th consecutive year of band concerts on the Village Green in Canfield, presented by the Youngstown Symphonic Band.

Rossi and the Youngstown Symphonic Band started these summer concerts on the Village Green in 1955 and they have grown into a full summer series of music on the Village Green.

At the opening concert, titled “The Sounds of Summer,” the Youngstown Symphonic Band will feature vocal soloist Eric McClellan.

The band will play a number of marches, Broadway show compositions, patriotic selections and other well-known band compositions. The public is invited to attend the opening of the outdoor summer band concert on the Village Green in Canfield.

McClellan attended the Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University, has been a vocal soloist in many of the local churches and has performed at the Youngstown Playhouse, the New Castle Playhouse and Powers Auditorium in Youngstown.

The program will also feature a Flag Day presentation titled “The Meaning of the Thirteenth Fold of the American Flag.” This patriotic program will be presented by retired Naval Capt. Milton Kochert of Canfield. Kochert is a retired social studies teacher form Poland local schools.
