Camp offers opportunity for young players

Nebraska football coach Bo Pelini and Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops will headline Cardinal Mooney’s annual “Camp of Champions” June 28-29.

University of Arizona football coach Mike Stoops and Waynesburg coach Rick Shepas will also serve as camp coaches. All four are Mooney High graduates.

The camp takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Mooney’s campus and is open to those entering grades four through nine.

Other guest clinicians include Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach Michael Zordich, Penn State offensive coordinator Jay Paterno, Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini, Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, Kent State defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis, YSU offensive coordinator Shane Montgomery, Florida linebackers coach D.J. Durkin, YSU secondary coach Ron Stoops, Nebraska running backs coach Tim Beck, Georgetown defensive line coach Frank Colaprete and Northwestern State receivers coach Matt Kubik.

In a new addition to this year’s camp, Don Beebe’s House of Speed will hold an athletic combine from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 June 29, allowing athletes to compete in speed drills such the 40-yard dash along with other agility, power and quickness drills. For details, visit www.cardinalmooney.com.

Golf course hosts tournament

Mill Creek Golf Course will host its People for MetroParks annual golf outing Wednesday.

This year’s event will be a four-person scramble with handicaps. There will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Farmers National Bank will provide lunch after golf. Registration includes green fees, cart, skill shots, prizes and lunch. A team handicap will be assigned by one of our golf professionals.

Annual bocce social at MVR June 27

The Ron Stoops Sr. and Anthony Pelini Memorial Foundation will hold its annual bocce social from noon to 9 p.m. June 27 at the MVR. For details, call Ron Stoops at 330-502-3747.

Fitch girls soccer camp registration ends July 1

Girls entering grades three through eight in any community are eligible to attend the 2010 Fitch Girls Soccer Camp July 19-22 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fitch grass soccer fields behind Frank Ohl Intermediate.

Fitch girls coaches Carlo Trafficante, Tex Martin and John Breedlove will be instructors for the camp, along with Fitch girls varsity soccer players.

Each camper will be provided with the opportunity to become better overall soccer players. Topics to be addressed include foot skills, agility training, defending, passing and receiving, combination play, anticipating play, movement off the ball, finishing and goal tending.

The cost of the camp is $40 per player. In addition to instruction, each player will receive a Fitch soccer camp T-shirt. On the final day of camp, team competitions will take place with prizes awarded to the winners.

Players should bring soccer cleats, shin guards, a soccer ball (put your name on it), water and tennis shoes (in case we have to go indoors due to inclement weather). Don’t bring valuables or jewelry.

Phillips inducted into weightlifting HOF

John Phillips of Boardman was inducted into the World Association of Benchers and Dead Lifters Hall of Fame last month.

Phillips became the eighth member of the group’s hall and will now decide the induction of future members. A 1968 graduate of Poland High School, Phillips is a 1972 graduate of Youngstown State.

Phillips won the 2008 WABDL World Championship in the bench press, the 2007 and 2008 WABDL Ohio Bench Press Championship.

Hope Foundation sponsors softball game

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and Valley Home Health Care will put on a softball game Aug. 7 at Eastwood Field.
