More from Eastwood Field
New ownership: The Scrappers welcome Neil Fogarty as part-owner of the club this summer. A 1975 graduate of Warren Harding High, Fogarty said it’s a dream come true to own part of his hometown team. “I’m so happy I’m grinning from ear to ear,” he said. “Miracles do happen ... I’m blessed to be a part of this.” Fogarty said as a child he used to work at a Movie World across the parking lot from Eastwood Field. “There was no baseball field here back then,” he said. “And now I’m across the parking lot from where I used to work and am part-owner of the team. I’m as happy as can be.” Now a resident of Pittsburgh and a business professor at the University of Pittsburgh, Fogarty said he is most excited for his two young sons. Sean, who is “13 going on 30” and Kellen, 12, should have a blast, their father said. “One thing I’m trying to teach them is that if there is something you want to do in life, try it,” he said. “Don’t lose the vision, and if things don’t work out, keep going for it and eventually it may come by. I’m 53 now, and I would’ve like to do this at 23. It took 30 years, but it happened.”
Strong season: The Scrappers made their fourth championship series appearance last summer, falling to Staten Island 2-1. They finished a league-best 49-27 during the regular season, winning the Pinckney Division.
Attendance falls: The Scrappers averaged 3,178 fans per game last summer, lowest in team history. Their best season came in 2000, averaging 5,429 fans. They averaged 3,426 in 2008. Mahoning Valley ranked eighth in attendance in the 14-team New York-Penn League. Brooklyn was first with 7,138 per game, while Oneonta was last with 692 per game.
