GREENSBURG, Pa.

A man who eluded state police for nearly three months on insurance-fraud charges killed himself in a western Pennsylvania jail by slashing his throat with a safety razor.

Westmoreland County Warden John Walton says 44-year-old David McGinnis, of Bolivar, was shaving when his cellmate looked down from his bunk and saw McGinnis “laying in bed with blood rushing out of his neck.”

McGinnis was pronounced dead at 8:50 a.m. at a Greensburg hospital.

State police charged McGinnis with insurance fraud and accused him of burning down his own home in March, but he eluded capture until U.S. marshals found him in Columbia, S.C., on May 28.

The warden says McGinnis was shaving for a court appearance on the charge when he slashed himself.
