1844: Charles Goodyear receives a patent for his process to vulcanize rubber.
1864: Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton signs an order establishing a military burial ground, which becomes Arlington National Cemetery.

1985: The Ohio Historical Society places a marker on Federal Plaza to commemorate the 1937 Little Steel Strike that resulted in the deaths of two local steelworkers. Among those attending the dedication is Carl “Jerry” Beck, one of the 1937 strikers.
Dr. John M. Duggan, president of St. Mary’s College in Notre Dame, Ind., urges 1,066 graduates of Youngstown State University to set personal goals: “Life is long enough that you can recover from all sorts of false starts, but it is not so long that you can just drift.”
1970: Frank F. Ferris, 70-year-old retired Mahoning County courthouse employee, lands a Piper Super Cub in a wheat field off Hitchcock Road after the engine died following takeoff from Boardman Airpark. Ferris and a companion, Frances L. Steffen, suffer minor injuries; the plane is damaged beyond repair.
The body of a woman, her feet bound with wire, is found by vacationers at Mosquito Lake near Cortland.
1960: Bryon Wade, veteran clerk of the Mahoning County Board of Elections, and Jack Sulligan, longtime deputy clerk, are ousted from their posts by Secretary of State Ted Brown after an investigation shows as many as 2,500 voters lost their votes because of irregularities in the May primaries.
1935: Julian Howe, superintendent of the W. Federal Street liquor store, announces that both Youngstown liquor stores will be open from 8 a.m. to midnight Monday through Saturday.
W.O. Cline, a clerk at a dairy store at 804 W. Market Street, Warren, is wounded by a rifle-wielding robber after the man orders Cline to give him the day’s receipts, which the clerk was counting, and Cline responded, “go to hell.” The robber fled empty-handed.
