Poland duo named All-Ohio
COLUMBUS
Poland sophomores Erin Gabriel and Jenna Modic earned first team All-Ohio honors in Division II, while junior teammate Adrianna Sikora was named to the second team by the Ohio Softball Coaches Association.
In Division III, Ursuline seniors Casey Lower and Sarah Ingalls made the first team, as did Mooney senior Christina Hrehor. Ursuline senior Malikka Caige was named to the second team and Lisbon junior Katie Snoddy earned honorable mention.
Jackson-Milton senior Lindsey Knipp and Columbiana sophomore Katie Libb made first team in Division IV, Western Reserve senior Heather Monoski and JFK senior Kim Sylvester made second team and Mathews senior Stephanie Durig was honorable mention.
Baseball All-Ohio
COLUMBUS
Canfield’s Brett Cooper earned honorable mention All-Ohio in Division II by the Ohio Baseball Coaches Association.
Girard outfielder Michael Floravit earned honorable mention in Division III, while Warren JFK teammates James Coates and Alex Cuckovich earned honorable mention in Division IV.
B.L.’s Kinsey earns All-America
EUGENE, Ore. — University of Akron senior decathlete Daniel Kinsey set three personal records at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships last weekend to place sixth, up 16 spots from his first day standing.
Earning his second All-American status, the Beaver Local High graduate set records in three events including the discus (160 feet, 5 inches), javelin (203-6) and 1, 500-meter run (4.38), scoring 7,524 points.
Kinsey will compete at the U.S. Championships from June 23-27 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Kinsey placed 11th in the event last year.
DeFrank to fight
TAMPA, Fla.
Former Girard resident Alecia DeFrank is scheduled to fight in the USA senior regionals in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., June 25-27, after winning the Florida state championship at 125 pounds.
DeFrank earned her state title with a four-round decision over Perry Piece of Gainesville, Fla. in May.
DeFrank’s record is 17-8, including 4-1 since moving to Florida, where she in Port Richey at the Four-Corners Boxing Club, which is operated by John Cassella. Her trainers are Cassella and Steve Zouski. Cassella is also her manager.
If successful in Roanoke Rapids against female fighters from North and South Carolina and Atlanta, DeFrank would advance to the national championships in Denver.
Armstrong’s team unhappy at Vuelta snub

Lance Armstrong’s RadioShack team complained of unfair treatment Monday after being refused an invitation to take part in the Spanish Vuelta.
The Vuelta organizers announced the 22 teams that will compete in this year’s race. Sixteen teams were preselected under an agreement between race organizers and the International Cycling Union (UCI), including Astana, Quick Step and Euskaltel-Euskadi. Another six received invitations: Andalucia-Cajasur, Xacobeo-Galicia, Cervelo TestTeam, Team Sky, Katusha and Garmin-Transitions.
Opening match draws many SAfrican viewers

More than 10 million television viewers in South Africa watched the host play Mexico to open the World Cup.
FIFA says 87 percent of people watching television at home in South Africa last Friday saw SABC1 and SuperSport 3 broadcasts of the 1-1 draw.
That’s nearly 3 million more than South Africa’s highest-rated sports broadcast last year, when the host team played Brazil in the Confederations Cup.
FIFA says an average of almost one in five Mexicans with televisions on at home watched last Friday.
