A trio of former Class B League players earned honors in college baseball this season.

Matt Pitzulo (Poland), was named second-team All-Mid-American Conference.

He finished his freshman season at Bowling Green hitting .367 overall in 42 games. He started 34 games — nine at second base, two at shortstop and 23 as designated hitter. He finished 2010 with three home runs, 23 RBIs and tied for the team lead with 12 doubles.

Sophomore Drew Turocy (Canfield) had 95 hits for Akron, breaking the school’s single-season record. Steve Sada held the old mark of 94.

Eddie Rohan (Ursuline) batted .307 and led Winthrop with 13 home runs. He tied for the team lead with 40 RBIs. Rohan has led the Eagles in home runs for three seasons. Rohan achieved a career milestone in 2010 as he eclipsed 40 career home runs and is only the 10th player in Big South Conference history to accomplish that feat.

He ranks fourth in Winthrop history in career home runs with 40.

HAMLINE

Becky Culp, a former Austintown resident, placed sixth in the discus at the NCAA Division III women’s track and field championships for Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., with a distance of 140 feet, 3 inches.

Culp, who was Federal League and county champion in the eighth grade at Frank Olh Middle School, relocated to Minnesota in the 10th grade. She was all-state there as a high school junior and senior and set a school record in the discus with a throw of 135-7.

WESTMINSTER

The Eastern College Athletic Conference named Westminster College softball player Katie Hughes (Cardinal Mooney) to its Division III South All-Star team.

A freshman designated hitter/shortstop, Hughes was named to the second team. She batted .379 (36 for 95), good for second on the team and seventh in the PAC, while starting 38 games. She hit five doubles, one triple and three home runs to go with 28 RBIs. Her team-high .465 on-base percentage ranked fourth in the conference and she also drew a team-high 17 walks.

Hughes was also named first team All-PAC and second team all-region.

MOUNT UNION

Sharpsville High School senior Cameron Christopher has committed to attend Mount Union and compete on the baseball team.

Christopher, a 5-foot-8, 200-pound catcher, was a three-year letterwinner who led the team in home runs each of the last two years for coach Mike Sikorski at Sharpsville High School.

Also, Thomas Beck of Cardinal Mooney will attend Mount Union and compete on the men’s soccer team.

He was the captain of the Mooney squad as a senior and a four-year letterman. Beck, who was The Vindicator’s soccer athlete of the Year, was twice selected all-district and was named academic All Ohio as a senior. He was also first team All-State and Region IV All American by the National Soccer Coaches Association.

WOOSTER

Nicholas Jacubec and Kory George, of Struthers, will attend the College of Wooster and compete on the football team.

Both are graduates of Struthers High School. George was class Valedictorian, and Jacubec graduated with a 3.7 GPA.
