Pa. House debates bill on public-sector pensions

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is considering substantial changes to how the state’s two large public-sector pension systems operate.

The House began debate today on legislation that would reduce a looming increase in pension costs for state government and school districts, and change the rules for new hires.

A final vote on the legislation isn’t expected until Wednesday at the earliest.

The proposals would not eliminate the need for substantially higher costs to taxpayers but would reduce the amount.
