Authorities believe arson is to blame for six vehicles burned in front of a Simon Road auto-repair shop. Police and firefighters were called shortly before 3 a.m. Monday to D&M Auto Repair on a report of several vehicles on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames.

The six vehicles were parked side by side along the east edge of the parking lot. The shop’s owner told police that five of the vehicles were at the shop for repairs. The sixth was being used for parts. A fire investigator told police he believes the fire was intentionally set, a police report said.

AFSCME contract

YOUNGSTOWN

The city school district has reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with its 295 employees represented by the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union. Superintendent Wendy Webb said terms of the proposal will be presented to the school board tonight. If the terms are acceptable, the contract will submitted to the board and the union’s three bargaining units for ratification.

AFSCME is coming off a three-year wage-freeze contract that saw only a handful of employees who were still on a salary-step schedule getting any additional money during that time frame. Employees, for the first time, began picking up a portion of their health-care premiums in that contract.
