Federation presents scholarship, awards

YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown Area Federation of Women’s Clubs met for its annual scholarship and community awards luncheon on May 19 at the Youngstown Country Club. Presiding was Dorothy Thomas, outgoing president.

Kathleen Rickert, awards committee chairwoman, presented the federation’s community award to Jacqueline Burley, executive director of Protestant Family Services.

Valorie Zurawick, scholarship committee chairwoman, presented the federation’s annual $2,500 scholarship to Samantha Tortura, a junior majoring in psychology at Youngstown State University.

Also receiving special recognition at the event was the Fortnightly IV Club, which has been an active part of the federation for 50 years.

Following the awards ceremony Elva Easton conducted the installation of club officers for 2010-2012. Inducted were Debra Kostelic, president; Rusti Puromaki, first vice president; Barbara Higgins, second vice president; Lucile Bartelmay, third vice president; Catherine Campana, recording secretary; Marilyn Morelli, corresponding secretary; and Sally Schlabaugh, treasurer.

A program of piano music was presented by Sean Baran, a junior at Youngstown State University Dana School of Music.
