Mr., Mrs. Friend to attend dinner on anniversary

POLAND
Mr. and Mrs. Howard B. Friend of Poland will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary during a family dinner on June 26 at the Salem Golf Club. Their children and grandchildren will be the hosts for the event.
Their family includes Howard T. and Cathi Friend of Lisbon; D. Scott and Sue Friend of Okemos, Mich.; and Judy and Craig Sheetz of Edmond, Okla. They have nine grandchildren.
Mr. Friend, who is known as “Howdy,” served in World War II and in the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star. While working at YMCA Camp Fitch he met Ellen G. Williams. The couple were married June 17, 1950, at Hillman Street Christian Church in Youngstown. They have been members of Poland United Methodist Church for 55 years.
Mrs. Friend, who is know as Gert, graduated from Mount Union College and was a teacher and tutor in the Poland, Boardman and Canfield school districts prior to retiring.
Mr. Friend also graduated from Mount Union College, and he retired in 1981 after 34 years in education, the last 10 years as superintendent of the Mahoning County Career Center. He also worked in the marketing department of Home Savings and Loan Co. before retiring in 1991.
The Friends are active with Youngstown YMCA, Camp Fitch, and the Four Square Club. He has been involved in several civic organizations for the past 60 years.
