The McGuffey Centre’s been around for 70 years, and that calls for a celebration — or three.
A carnival will kick off a trio of celebration festivities. The event, to be at noon next Saturday, continues the center’s history of hosting carnivals, said Jennifer Miller, executive director.
The carnival will include vendors, clowns and face painting. There also will be cultural and historical activities.
And, keeping with tradition, there will be a pig roast and barbecue.
One week later, at 7:30 p.m. June 26, the celebration continues with an Old School Party and Dance.
The event offers a chance for the community to stroll down memory lane, Miller said. A DJ will play music from the 1940s through today.
“We just want everybody to come,” Miller said. “It’s going to be lots of fun.”
The final celebration will be an Evening in Elegance at 5:30 p.m. July 9. The event will be an elegant party, Miller said.
It will include dinner, special presentations to former directors and board members, and a dance.
In the past, annual dinners of 300 people took place in the center. But many people today don’t realize how much space the facility boasts and how beautiful it can be, Miller said.
“I’m sure we can transform this building into a beautiful jewel again in the community and show how elegant it can be,” she said.
The McGuffey Centre, located at 1649 Jacobs Road, is a community center that offers activities for the whole family. Programming includes after-school activities, summer day camps, computer classes, teen recreation and senior services such as adult day services.
