Twenty-nine fire chaplains, police chaplains and other clergy completed pastoral crisis intervention training May 25 through a program offered by St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, Hermitage Volunteer Fire Department and Hermitage Police Department.
Area participants were Dale Goist of Kinsman; Jerry Graham of Wheatland, Pa.; Steven Harrell, Marshall Lillie and Martin Roth, all of Greenville, Pa.; Larry Johnson of Boardman; David Torrence of Hermitage; William Williamson of Grove City, Pa.; and Gary Winemiller of West Middlesex, Pa.
The class, taught by the Rev. Edgar Hatcher of Missouri, combined the traditional techniques of crisis intervention with faith-based resources that clergy of all faiths can offer to first responders and victims of traumatic events.

The Classic Imperials will be in concert Thursday at Bridge of Hope Church, 7580 Glenwood Ave. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the concert at 6:30.

To be ordained

Stephen Zeigler, a seminarian at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati, will be ordained to the transitional diaconate for the Diocese of Youngstown at 10:30 a.m. today at his home parish, St. Michael in Canfield.
Ordination to the transitional diaconate precedes priesthood ordination, which is anticipated for 2011.
Deacon Zeigler attended St. Joseph School and York Catholic High School there.
He also studied for the priesthood at Borromeo College in Wickliffe, Ohio.
Deacon Zeigler will preach at all the Masses on the weekend of June 19-20 at St. Barbara Church in Massillon.
A reception will follow each Mass.
Ministries program

The Youngstown Chapter of Igniting New Life Ministries International, an inter-denominational ministry, will meet June 21 at Georgeanna Parker Activity Center in Boardman Park.
Fellowship will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the ministry beginning at 7.
Guest speaker will be Pastor Kathy Falk, an associate pastor of The Threshing Floor Church in Lisbon.

A Children’s Day musical celebration is planned at 5 p.m. Sunday at Holy Temple Church of God in Christ, 161 Early Road, by its youth department.

Sts. Peter and Paul Croatian Catholic Church, 421 Covington St., will have a kick-off celebration for its 100th anniversary at 4 p.m. June 26.
A cookout dinner will be served at 5 p.m. and there will be music until 9 p.m.

‘Standing for Israel’

Western Reserve Community Church, 8590 Hitchcock Road, will conduct a “Standing for Israel” program.
Pastor Ed Smelcer of Bridges for Peace will speak at 10:45 a.m. Sunday. The Davidic Army of God will present a Hebrew workshop at 7 p.m. that day. Pastor Smelcer will speak on Israel from 8:30 a.m. to noon Monday.

On Father’s Day

Pleasant Valley Church, 2055 Pleasant Valley Road, will host James Ryle, a guest speaker, during a service at 10:30 a.m. June 20. He was placed in an orphanage at the age of 6 and sentenced to the Texas State Penitentiary at 19.
Ryle has been involved in public speaking since 1972, serving as pastor of two churches over 24 years, and chaplain for the University of Colorado football team for 10 years. Ryle is the president and founder of TruthWorks, a teaching and resourcing ministry. He is a best-selling author.

Shiloh Baptist Church, 238 Bright St., will celebrate the installation of its new pastor, the Rev. Ricky Tigner, at 4 p.m. Sunday. He has been the interim pastor for Shiloh for the past few months.
A service at 10:45 a.m. will feature the Rev. Gary Rozier of Alpha and Omega First Baptist Church as speaker. The Rev. Jack Pettis, pastor, and Mount Zion Baptist Church members will attend the service at 4 p.m.

Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church, 1210 Himrod Ave., will observe a vesper service at 10:45 a.m. Sunday at which all recent high school and college graduates and their parents will be recognized.
Dr. Alison J. Harmon, associate dean of the Beeghly College of Education, associate dean in the College of Education and associate professor in the Department of Teacher Education at Youngstown State University, will speak. Her career spans 34 years in education.

Tia Ciferno will lead a worship service at 10 a.m. June 20 at First Presbyterian Church, 3654 Main St.
She is a singer, songwriter, author and speaker. She has recorded several CDs, including “Healer of My Heart,” “Heaven Sent” and “Legacy.”

Deacon ordained
BOARDMAN
Christopher Zeke Coughlin of Boardman was ordained as a transitional deacon by Bishop Mark Hollingsworth, the 11th bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, on June 5 at Trinity Cathedral in Cleveland.
A transitional deacon is a man or woman who is ordained a deacon with the intention of becoming a priest.
His sponsoring parish was St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Cleveland Heights.
For the past two years, Deacon Coughlin has served as seminary intern at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 7640 Glenwood Ave., and most recently as its youth ministry coordinator.
He will preach his first sermon as a deacon at 10 a.m. Sunday at St. James.
Under his leadership, six members of the youth group traveled to Harlan, Ky., in June 2009 to participate in a project sponsored by Christian Outreach with Appalachian People. They were involved in home repair in an area of economic hardship.
The group also has assisted with food distribution at the Three Loaves Food Pantry in Salineville.
Deacon Coughlin, who was born in Youngstown, graduated from Indian Creek High School, Wintersville, and earned a degree in religious studies at The College of Wooster. He was a computer programmer before enrolling in Bexley Hall Seminary in Columbus where he earned a master’s in divinity.
Deacon Coughlin’s wife, Lisa, is a general-surgery resident at Northside Medical Center.
Freemasons’ service

Members of the Freemasons’ fraternity, together with their families, will participate in worship at 10 a.m. June 20 at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, 159 Todd Ave.
The Masons, led by District Deputy Grand Master Gordon E. Hensel of Mercer, will wear their aprons and jewels.
Also participating will be members of Mount Calvary Commandery of the Masonic Knights Templar, dressed in military-style uniforms. The Knights Templar is a Christian-oriented fraternal organization based on (but not descended from) the ancient organization that was founded in the 11th century.
Pastor David Williamson is a grand chaplain emeritus of the Masonic Grand Lodge of New York State and a past grand chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut.
