One Mahoning County Career and Technical Center student extends love of career into volunteer work.

Amber Manion has found her passion in life — helping others. As a senior in the Health Tech Prep program at MCCTC, she’s developed an appreciation for the medical profession and an enthusiasm for caring for others.

Manion is a member of the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Teen Outreach program and volunteers her time to various activities within the hospital. Whether it’s saving pop tabs for a fundraiser, decorating the hospital hallways or helping children pick out a book to read, Manion finds it brings her great joy.

“The program is a lot of fun. I love getting to interact with the children and be able to bring them some happiness during their stay in the hospital,” Manion said.

The Teen Outreach program is made up of high school students from 18 area schools who serve as reading mentors, conduct children’s activities at hospital events, assist with fundraisers and decorate the hospital.

In Manion’s second, and last, year in program, she reflected on what the experience has meant to her.

“This has given me a greater understanding of the compassion in this field for people in need, especially children. I was able to see just how much children and their families can benefit from our fundraisers and services,” she said.

This month, Manion will graduate from MCCTC and continue her education to earn her EMT Basic this summer.
