Kickball isn’t just a game for kids — adults can play, too.

Market Street Elementary hosted its first Battle of Boardman classroom competition June 7. The competition challenged fourth-grade students and adults to various physical activities. The winning classroom played against their teachers in a game of kickball.

The day began with each fourth-grade class battling each other in five events. They were broken into “A” and “B” teams to make things run smoother. The games included big-ball volleyball, catch-up relay, bean bag toss, basketball show-off and ultimate tug of war.

Points were given at each station for winning, depending on the activity. Some points were determined by how many points were scored in the game. The classroom that received the most points moved on to the finale which was a kickball match against the school’s faculty and staff.

After tallying the points from both teams, it was determined that Cheryl Snyder’s fourth-grade class won the morning battle against the other classes and would proceed to the main event — the kickball game.

Physical education teacher Matt Cuse said Snyder’s fourth-graders were pretty challenging. More than 15 school staff members rallied together to face off with the students. Teachers said it was fun, but also very exhausting.

“They weren’t a pushover, they really played hard,” Cuse said.

Market Street students from all grades took a break from their schoolwork to watch the big match. Most students were cheering for their peers, but not Rebecca Choleva. Her mother is a kindergarten teacher at the school and she was on her mother’s side.

“My mom is a part of the staff so I thought it would only be right to cheer them on,” she said. “They did good.”

Faculty and staff won the kick ball game by one run which was scored in the final round.

The fourth-graders fought back and overtook their teachers in a tug of war, following the kickball game.

This was the first year the school hosted the Battle of Boardman classroom competition, but there are plans to make it a Market Street tradition.

“This will give them something to look forward to,” Cuse said.
