Boardman junior golfer fifth at event

Boardman’s Joe Fait finished at 6-over to tie for fifth in the boys 16-19 division at the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Golf event at Mill Creek Park Saturday. The event was part of the Kenny Novak Tour.

The event featured junior players from all over Northern Ohio and included three age divisions for boys and girls. Golfers ranged from age 12 to 19.

In the girls’ 16-19 division, Boardman’s Jessica Kinnick fired a 43 to tie for 10th with Canfield’s Amanda Orr. Poland’s Maria Mancini shot a 1-over 36 to win the event. Canfield’s Whitney Graff shot a 37 to finish second.

ABC defeats Yosay Photography

The girls from ABC used a total team effort to defeat Yosay Photography June 5 in Boardman Community Baseball action. Every member of ABC scored at least once during the game. Ella Catanzarite, Brianna Valentini, and Anna Shevock all went 4-for-4, combining for eight RBIs on the day. Teammates Alexia Spangler and Samantha Aey scored three runs each.

Marlee Catanzarite stood out defensively for ABC, recording two outs in the second and one in the third.

Golf Course hosts tournament

Mill Creek Golf Course will host its People for MetroParks annual golf outing June 23.

This year’s event will be a four-person scramble with handicaps. There will be a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m.

Farmers National Bank will provide lunch after golf. Registration includes green fees, cart, skill shots, prizes and lunch. A team handicap will be assigned by one of our golf professionals.

For those unable to fill a full team, they can register individually.

Cost is $60 per player or $240 per team.

Sixth inning sparks win for Wells Fargo

Boardman’s Wells Fargo Pony League 13-14 year old division team scored seven runs in the sixth inning to erase a three-run deficit and finished with a win over Struthers’ St. Anthony’s June 1.

Fargo pitcher Evan Croutch picked up the victory in relief and Eddie Crump hit a three-run home run. Christian Lowery doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Danny Martin had three singles. The team had eight hits and three errors to St. Anthony’s nine hits and four errors.

YSU runners perform well in Memorial Mile

The Memorial Mile in Boardman attracted 248 runners in its 20th year and Youngstown State University runners performed well.

Tisia Kiplangat, a Youngstown State runner ran away from the field to win the race.

YSU runner Samantha Hamilton finished 14th overall to win on the female side.

YSU track and field coach Brian Gorby won the master’s crown for the men and Karen Grantonic was female masters winner.

The race was sponsored by the Jock Stop, the DeBartolo Corporation, Armstrong Cable, Sweeney Chevrolet, Road I.D., Rulli Bros., Schwebel’s, Udder Cream, McDonalds, Custom Tarpaulin and Home Savings and Loan.

Boardman girls beat Springfield team

Boardman Mayo defeated Springfield 12-10 June 1 in Boardman Community Baseball play.

Nicole Sanfillipo pitched the first five innings and gave way to Lyndsay Soltice in relief. Sanfillipo, Julie Sands, Jenna Fonner and Rachel Mayhew had two RBIs apiece. Sands also had three hits and Sanfillipo added two hits.

Local athlete to play at Mount Union this fall

Thomas Beck, a forward on Cardinal Mooney’s soccer team, has announced he has accepted an athletic grant-in-aid to play soccer at Mount Union College.

He was the captain of the Mooney squad this season and a four-year letterman. In addition, Beck was named boys soccer “Athlete of the Year.” He was selected to the all district team as a junior and senior and named an Academic All Ohio performer this year. In addition he was named first team All-State and Region IV All American by the National Soccer Coaches Association.

Boardman teen qualifies for Junior PGA event

Jake Fait, a 16-year-old from Boardman, recently qualified for the Junior PGA Championship at Sweet Briar Golf Club in Avon Lake after carding a 2-under par 69 at Riceland Golf Club in Orrville.

This spring, Fait qualified for the Optimist Junior Invitational of Ohio in Dayton and also placed second at a Plantations Tour Event in Lansing, Mich.

Mayo pitchers hold Struthers to four-hitter

Boardman Mayo pitchers Taylor Prebble and Nicole Sanfillipo combined on a four-hitter, but the team still suffered a 7-5 loss to Struthers May 26.

Mayo Tri-T Fastpitch’s Holly King had two RBIs and Stephanie Rosine and Julie Sands each had two hits.

Boardman Mayo comes up short Boardman Mayo rallied from a 6-1 deficit and fell short May 25, losing 7-6 to Canfield.

On offense, Taylor Prebble tallied three hits and Nicole Sanfillipo and Katie Seeco had two hits each. Pitcher Lyndsay Soltice went the distance for the team, giving up seven hits and three earned runs.

Phillips inducted into weightlifting HOF

John Phillips of Boardman was inducted into the World Association of Benchers and Dead Lifters Hall of Fame last month.

Phillips became the eighth member of the group’s hall and will now decide the induction of future members. A 1968 graduate of Poland High School, Phillips is a 1972 graduate of Youngstown State.

Phillips won the 2008 WABDL World Championship in the bench press, the 2007 and 2008 WABDL Ohio Bench Press Championship.

Hope Foundation sponsors softball game

The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley and Valley Home Health Care will put on a softball game Aug. 7 at Eastwood Field.

Ursuline basketball camp registration is open

The Ursuline High School boys basketball camp is June 14-16 for boys entering grades 4-8.

College coaches and former Ursuline standouts D’Aundray Brown ’and Nick McCartney will be in attendance.

Cost is $40. Call the Ursuline athletic office at 330-744-4563, ext. 121 to register. Registration will begin at noon on June 14 in the gym lobby. A parent must accompany each participant to sign a waiver.
