First-, second- and third-graders at Hilltop Elementary School participated in the end-of-the-year ritual of Field Day May 26. Each grade had a chance to play games and run races.

The day was organized by Hilltop gym teacher Dolores Saunders. Students were given a preview of the events and good sportsmanship was stressed and no score was kept. The teachers assisted Saunders during the races.

Activities included the zig zag relay in which students form a single file line and stand about 5 feet apart all facing forward. The last player in line zig zags in and out of all the players until he gets to the front of the line.

He then stops 5 feet in front of the front player and yells “go” and the next player at the end of the line runs the zig zag course. This process continues until all players have finished the course.

Another relay race the students played was the passing relay during which one player from each team, holding a ball, faces his players who are in a line about 10 feet away. The player passes the ball to the first player in line. That player then passed it back and sits down. This process continues until everyone in line has caught, passed and sat down.

Each class was split into two teams for each relay, with one team playing and one team sitting out. This provided the teams sideline cheering sections for support and to cheer their team on to victory.
