HELOISE: Numbers are up for lost phones

Dear Readers: My, oh my! There seem to be more cell-phone catastrophes than one could have imagined. Here goes:

A Reader, via e-mail, says: “My husband was mowing the grass when his phone fell out of his pocket and he mowed over it. Also, one time he set it on the fence post, and his horse reached over, picked it up in his teeth and crunched it.”

David of Abilene, Texas, says: “My wife sat her purse down on the restroom counter and didn’t realize that the purse had slid into the sink. The automatic faucet filled her purse with water.”

Linda Smith, via e-mail, says: “I was filling up my grandchildren’s kiddie pool and stepped into it to encourage them to come in, then I slipped and fell smack into the water. Needless to say, the impact and water destroyed the phone!”

Edie Yeargin, via e-mail, says: “My husband and I were boating with my daughter and her family. My son-in-law was helping my husband put the boat in the water. Suddenly, we saw Joel jump into the water. My husband had forgotten to put the plug in the boat. The boat was saved, but Joel realized that in his pocket was his new cell phone!”

Linda in Amarillo, Texas, says, “My husband buried a cell phone while digging sprinkler-system ditches, and he threw one in a trash bin, attached to the wallpaper he was taking down.”

A Reader from Houston says: “I was squatting on the side of my swimming pool to reach the pool vacuum. My dog jumped on my back and shoved me into the pool, with my cell phone in my pocket.”

Susan Anderson of Aberdeen, S.D., says: “While ice fishing, my husband bent over to pull out a fish, and his cell phone fell into the ice hole. An expensive fish dinner that evening!”

Ken Thompson of Bellville, Texas, says: “While our son was riding a roller coaster, his phone sailed out of his pocket. He later found it, or most of the pieces, beneath the girders of the coaster.”

Soooo many different stories — some funny, some not! A lesson for all of us: A teeny-tiny cell phone can end up just about anywhere!
