The Columbiana County commissioners on Wednesday approved replacing floor tile in the county’s municipal court.

Summitville Tile of Summitville was awarded the contract for $24,750. The court, at 38832 Saltwell Road, handles most of the misdemeanor criminal, traffic and small civil cases in the county.

According to the company’s quote, it would take about a month to get the tile and needed materials. It would take an additional three to four weeks to install the tiles. The work will include tearing out the old tiles, extensive floor preparation and the installation of a crack-isolation membrane and then installing the new tiles.

Penny Traina, the president of the commissioners, said that the tiles were being replaced because they were unstable, and officials did not want anyone to slip on them.

The building opened in June 2005 and has had problems, including a leaky roof, for some time.

In early 2009, the commissioners filed a lawsuit against Vendrick Construction Inc., which built the structure, and Strollo Architects in Columbiana, which oveersaw the project.

The county is asking for more than $25,000 in damages. The case is pending in county common-pleas court.
