Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties’ Baker of the Day is Monday from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Great Harvest Bread Co., 7684 Market St.

For the event, Easter Seals volunteers along with Great Harvest owners, Andrew and Laura Cuttica, and their staff are rolling out the dough to raise funds for Easter Seals’ 2 Million Penny Drive with Penny the Pig.

Great Harvest is providing the products needed to make four types of bread – Honey Whole Wheat, Old Fashioned White, Cinnamon Raisin White and Oregon Herb. Oatmeal Chocolate Cookies will also be available. Each loaf will be sold for a minimum donation of $5; cookies are $1 each. Pre-orders are encouraged. Delivery is available.

A “Golden Loaf Award” will be presented to the individual and to an organization who raises the most “dough” for one loaf of bread.

Loan applications

CANFIELD

Application forms for low-interest student loans are available from the Mahoning County Medical Society Foundation. The deadline to apply is June 30.

Students applying for loans must be residents of Mahoning or Trumbull County and must be enrolled in a medical school or school of osteopathic medicine, or be participating in the bridge program at the year-three level or higher with Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.

Interest on the loans is 1 percent below the prime rate at the time the loan is granted. Interest is forgiven if the recipient returns to Mahoning or Trumbull County to practice medicine and becomes a member of the Mahoning County Medical Society. Health fair

A free health fair is scheduled for June 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Prima Healthcare Columbiana Site, 107 Royal Birkdale Drive.

There will be representatives from Prima Healthcare, Hometown Pharmacy, Seeley Medical Supply, Delta Sleep Lab, The Finesst, and Quest Diagnostics.

Free blood-pressure checks and food and drinks will be available.

Award winner

Kim Stewart, director of permanency planning for Northeast Ohio Adoption Services, (NOAS) has been named the 2010 NOAS Social Worker of the Year.

She was also presented $500 by Carter P. Lewis of Howland, president of The Eileen Price Lewis and Barbara Lewis Roberts Foundation at the Lewis Roberts Foundation’s 17th annual Play it for the Kids golf outing award ceremony at the Trumbull Country Club.

Stewart has been with NOAS for 16 years, beginning when she was earning her bachelor of arts degree in social work at Youngstown State University. She subsequently earned a master’s degree in social work and has been in her position at NOAS for three years.

Wing cook-off

SHARON, PA.

The United Way of Mercer County’s 2010 United Way Wing Cook-Off is June 17 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. at Tully’s in Sharon. Tickets cost $15 per person in advance or $20 at the door, with the first 200 attendees receiving a free wing cook-off T-shirt.

In addition to trophies and bragging rights for the winners, the wing cook-off will feature live DJ, drink specials, restaurant mascots, games and prizes, and, new this year, a cornhole competition. All proceeds benefit United Way of Mercer County, said Janice Schwanbeck, Wing Cook-Off chairwoman.

People who attend get the opportunity to sample and vote for the best wings. CPR class

Moms, dads and anyone interested in learning how to perform CPR, rescue breathing and choking rescues for children and infants without the added stress of testing for certification can attend Child/Infant CPR class June 24 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mahoning Chapter American Red Cross, 8392 Tod Ave. The fee is $25. Safety training

The American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter, 8392 Tod Ave., is offering a safety-training package for individuals and groups June 26 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Adult CPR and first aid training will be presented for the special rate of $50.

The course includes hands-on training by a certified American Red Cross instructor, a take-home manual for each participant, all materials needed to complete the training and American Red Cross certification upon successful completion.

Anyone interested in learning first aid without certification can skip CPR in the morning and register for the afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m. for $25. To register, call 330-726-6063.

Adult CPR classes

The American Red Cross Mahoning Chapter is offering Adult CPR classes at its training center at 8392 Tod Ave. from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. June 23 and 30. The $35 fee includes hands-on skills, a participant manual for each student to keep and American Red Cross certification. The classes are open to everyone age 14 or older. Doggie Brigade

Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley is accepting applications for its Doggie Brigade. The four-legged volunteers will tour the hallways, visit patients in their rooms and stop in the activity rooms to see children who are well enough to be out of bed.

All dogs undergo a veterinary exam and a behavioral screening process to ensure their suitability for the program. Once accepted into the brigade, both dogs and owners alike earn volunteer credit for their weekly or biweekly visits to the hospital. All Doggie Brigade members are registered by the Delta Society Pet Partners Program.

Northeast Ohio Adoption Services (NOAS) has added assessments for step-parent adoptions to its menu of services.

Working with an attorney and the local probate court, adopting step-parents are required to have an assessment, an evaluation of their current family situation, completed by a social worker. Generally, the assessment can be completed within 30 days.

Open house

Alliance Community Hospital is having a communitywide open house for its new Digital Mammography unit in its Imaging Department from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Adding this updated technology allows faster, easier and more detailed diagnoses for patients, officials said.

ACH imaging professionals will be on hand to answer questions, offer tours and provide educational information.

Health screening

The Visiting Nurse Association, 518 E. Indianola Ave., is having a health screening from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday that will include weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and medication review.

Also, there will be a presentation by Comfort Keepers, a home-health-care company.

Baby-sitting class

The American Red Cross of Mercer County is offering a baby-sitting class in its office at 517 W. Main St. June 16 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for boys and girls age 11 to 15. The cost is $40.
