Police shot a bank- robbery suspect in the shoulder after they say he tried to run down an officer with his car.
Pittsburgh police identified the suspect as Douglas Lee Higgins, 54, of Penn Hills, and said he remained in UPMC Mercy hospital Tuesday, though his wound is not life-threatening.
City officers began following the car Higgins was driving about 7:30 p.m. Monday because it matched the description of one seen leaving a PNC Bank robbery in neighboring Penn Hills a few hours earlier, Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard said Tuesday.
Two officers followed the car onto a dead-end street, at which point it moved in reverse toward the officers, narrowly missing one before hitting their patrol car, authorities said. One of the officers shot Higgins in the shoulder in the process, Richard said.
Police said they found $360 in cash and unspecified miscellaneous drugs in Higgins’ car and arrested him on charges of aggravated assault, reckless endangerment and fleeing or attempting to elude police, all stemming from the police pursuit.
