SALEM
A man who led a quiet life in Salem is facing decades in prison for murder and conspiracy in California.
Salem Police Det. David Talbert said Tuesday that Joseph Garivay, 42, has been convicted on two charges.
He was sentenced to 50 years to life for murder and 25 years in prison for conspiracy. He did not have details of the case.
He was called “Capone” while living in Los Angeles, police said. Locally, he was known as “LA.”
The detective said that under California law, a felon has to serve 85 percent of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
Talbert said in 2008 that Garivay was a model citizen while in Salem and drove for one of the city’s cab companies.
His wife, Lisa Marie, ran a soccer team with Garivay’s help. They have one child.
The detective said that they came to Salem to start a new life.
The local investigation began when detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department contacted Talbert. He talked to Garivay, who then drove across the country and turned himself in to California authorities in early 2008.
Garivay’s family has been relocated to an undisclosed location.
