Annual festival seeks applicants

The 12th annual Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church Italian Festival is seeking applicants for the scholarships, Little Prince and Princess pageants and the wine contest.
The festival — July 22-25 with the theme “From Italy with Love” — will be on the church grounds on Via Mount Carmel, just off East Rayen Avenue, next to Choffin Career Center.
Entertainment headliners will be New York singers Moreno Fruzzetti and Jimmy Alleva, and comedian Marcoantonio, along with The Good Fellos Italian showband from Cleveland.
Other scheduled acts will include Stefano, Capri Band, Jim Frank Trio, Frank Gallo, Rocky Chirchiglia, Franco Simone, John Gabrielle, Rex Taneri, Gabriele and Friends, and Dom Tocco and the Brotherhood.
Daily admission is $3. Daily tickets or a 4-day pass ($5) can be purchased in advance by mailing a check payable to Mount Carmel Festival to 35 W. McKinley Way, Poland, Ohio 44514. For information, call Tony Trolio at 330-757-2779.
The festival will begin with the annual scholarship breakfast banquet July 22 in Mount Carmel Hall, during which two students will receive $1,000 scholarships to Youngstown State University. Applications are being accepted now; they must be postmarked by June 9. Students must have completed one year of full-time enrollment at YSU to be eligible.
Cynthia Anderson, newly-appointed president of YSU, will be the keynote speaker at the banquet, and United Way’s Bob Hannon will serve as master of ceremonies.

Entries are also being sought for the Little Prince and Princess Pageant, which will accept the first 12 boys and 12 girls, ages 6-9, that apply. All of the children receive trophies and assorted gifts. A photo and some information about the child must be included with each application. Deadline is June 15. Call Dolly Crump at 330-549-9386
The homemade-wine contest will have three categories: white, red and rose. There is a $5 entry fee per bottle. Registration will be 4 to 6 p.m. July 25.

The festival will also have an Italian auction, with almost 300 feet of table space lined with sports items, food, clothing, jewelry and more.
