Boardman High School Graduation 2010
Cameras clicked and family members called out names as the 2010 class of Boardman High School filed into the crowded gymnasium.
“It’s a pleasure to share the intensity of emotions,” said Frank Lazzeri, superintendent.
He felt the joy of the students in their caps and gowns hugging friends at Sunday’s commencement, he said, and saw the unbridled enthusiasm for what they had accomplished.
They should take that enthusiasm out into the world with them, he added.
“I guarantee your world will change as you leave high school,” he said. “And, as a result of whatever it is you choose to do, our world will change as a result of your contributions.”
Nicolette Anzelmo, who graduated Sunday, was nervous about commencement — she didn’t want to fall during the ceremony — but is ready to get out into the world.
“It’s time,” she said. “I’m ready. I really am. I’m ready for the next phase of my life, to be independent and go to college and start my future.”
Anzelmo will attend Youngstown State University to pursue a career in the medical field.
Her favorite part of school was making friends.
“Friends make the days go by quicker than you could ever imagine,” she said.
Leah Kardoulias, a fellow graduate, also enjoyed the friendships she made.
“I’m going to miss friends, hanging out with everyone in classrooms, messing around, laughing,” she said. “I won’t see all those people in college.”
Kardoulias will attend Akron University to study early childhood education.
She’s ready, though a little nervous about leaving home.
“But it’s not far away, so I’m excited,” she said.
The four years of high school went fast, she noted.
“I met a lot of great people; a lot of great friends, a lot of good teachers,” she said. “I’m really excited to move on, but also sad at the same time to leave them.”
Kaitlin Turk, student council president, reminded her fellow graduates that they had all overcome obstacles in high school, and that they will face more in the future.
The support of friends and family helped them through those challenges, she said.
And by using the lessons they learned during their four years at Boardman High, they’ll get through other obstacles, as well, she said.
