Police: 9-year-old Akron boy dies after lake swim

Police say a 9-year-old Ohio boy has died after swimming in a lake near his family’s home.

Police say the boy was pulled from Nesmith Lake in Akron just before 5 p.m. Friday.

Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards says the boy and a friend were both inexperienced swimmers and that the friend went for help when the 9-year-old had trouble staying above water.

An adult called 911, and a dive team was sent to the lake about 3:20 p.m.

The boy was pronounced dead at Akron Children’s Hospital.

Police are investigating.
