HandsOn Volunteer Network of the Valley, a United Way Agency, is the local resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages and abilities in the Mahoning Valley located at Youngstown State University, second floor of the Williamson School of Business in the Center for Non-profit Excellence and our main office, 5500 Market St., Suite 106, Boardman. Hands On is a monthly column that serves to communicate the impact that volunteering can have on our community. Youth Volunteer Corps Summer of Service 2010: The Summer of Service program offers students an opportunity to work with a team of other young people to accomplish an important initiative at a local nonprofit organization. All projects are supervised by a trained adult team leader and coordinated by HOVN. Students can register for one project or an entire summer of projects based on their interests and availability. The projects for this year are with Habitat for Humanity, Mill Creek MetroParks, Youngstown Playhouse, Assumption Village, Lien Forward Ohio, and Trumbull Soil & Water Conservation District. Summer of Service Adult Team Leaders: We are seeking adult team leaders, 21 and older, to work alongside a small group of youth on service projects at Youngstown Playhouse, Mill Creek MetroParks, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Lien Forward Ohio, and Assumption Village. We will provide you with training and supplies. If you are a youth leader, coach, teacher, retiree or college student, this is a great summer opportunity for you. Biggest Weekend of the Summer: This year three of our Valley’s biggest events are coming together for one weekend, July 9-11. The Tour of the Valley professional cycling event, the YSU Festival of the Arts and the Youngstown Jazz Festival will all take place the same weekend in an effort to draw visitors to the city. You can be a part of this weekend by volunteering a few hours at one of these events:
Tour of the Valley: Volunteers are needed at the tour July 9-11 to direct traffic along the course, assist with rider registration and event setup and cleanup. Meals and T-shirts will be provided to volunteers who work a four-hour shift on one or all three days of the event. Volunteers must be at least 18. Summer Festival of the Arts: Many opportunities are available if you have a few hours or a whole day to give. Volunteers can help artists set up their booths or work with our Hands-On Art tent to assisting with musical, dance and theater productions. Benefit Bank appointments: Appointments Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting Tuesday for the Ohio Benefit Bank through the Ohio Veteran’s Project. The Ohio Veteran’s Project is designed to assist veterans in Mahoning and Trumbull counties and give them the opportunity to access social services and provide needed support.
