Poland Seminary High School students, parents, teachers, Poland Park board members and members of NSS Life Assembly 731 worked hard May 15 preparing the playground and walking trails at Poland Township Park for this year’s use.

Annual upkeep of the walking trails, playground, picnic areas, activity fields and parking areas are just a part of the necessary maintenance the community can be involved with.

The initial dream of the Poland Township Park began 10 years ago as the strip mining process ended and left many acres of land in Poland Township unable to be farmed or for home development.

Unused acreage was acquired from the former Carbon Limestone Co., now known as Republic Services-Sanitary Landfill, at a cost of $1 per year.

Republic Services has supported the project from the beginning with material contributions and use of its heavy equipment to clear the land.

As volunteers continue to work hard, this summer’s progress at the park includes newly-built picnic tables, a large pavilion, concession building and a playground.

Maintaining and improving the park is a long-term project which needs the continuous support of community volunteers.
