The Maplewood boys 4x800-meter relay team lowered their own school record but came up agonizingly short of a state title at Friday's Division III state track and field meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

The team of A.J. Grayson, Aaron Harrison, Wyatt Hartman and Eric Rupe finished in 7:50.51 — a few tenths faster than the school and regional record they ran last Wednesday in Navarre — but couldn't hold off Louisville St. Thomas Aquinas, which finished in 7:50.08.

By comparison, last year's state-winning time in Div. III was 7:53.90.

South Range also earned All-Ohio honors in the event by placing eighth (8:05.67). The top eight make the medal stand.

Lowellville's girls 4x800 relay placed sixth. The Rockets were the only area team to qualify in the race.

The relay is the only running final on Friday. In Division II, the Poland and Lakeview boys will run the relay at 1:45 p.m. No area girls qualified in the relay in Division II and no area teams on either side qualified in Division I.
