Love of literature is rewarded

Neighbors | Shaiyla Hakeem .As a part of RDE's Brown Bag Program, students from each grade performed skits for their peers and guests. These sophomores are pretending to be on an MTV book show where each student pretended to be a specific book that was read in the program.

Fitch High School hosted its 33rd annual Reading-Discussion-Enrichment Brown Bag program May 18 where students were awarded with certificates of completion and other prestigious awards.
The program was founded in 1977 by Ruth Gerrard Cold who remained the group’s coordinator for 19 years. Members are accepted by invitation-only and if the invitation is refused, another will not be sent.
It is a program that focuses on the reading of classic literature and small discussion groups. It is intended for academically-gifted students.
Each grade performed skits for parents and program members before receiving their awards. Special guest Chirs Yambar provided words of encouragement to students urging them to go after their dreams.
Yambar graduated from Fitch in 1979 and currently is an artist and writer for the Simpsons comic book line.
Perfect attendance awards, Austintown Lions awards and Austintown Rotary awards were among the many commendations presented during the program.
Since its initiation, the program has had more than 400 students graduate as participants.
