The Lloyd Elementary PTA Health and Safety Committee kicked off its “Step to It” program May 1.
Committee Chairperson Amy Buxbaum explained the details of the program after which each child received a free pedometer to wear the entire month of May. The faculty was also encouraged to participate.
Log sheets were given to record the amount of steps taken each day and each Monday of May, prizes are being given to the most traveled student.
Prizes are also being rewarded to the faculty member who walks the most each week. At the end of the month, the classroom that walks the most collectively, will win an outdoor party with activities and healthy snacks.
During the assembly, students were randomly drawn for an apple prize. After their name was called, they were to come in front and perform 10 repetitions of an exercise of their choice. Upon completion of the task, the student received an apple.
“Our hopes of the program is to promote more exercise and less couch time in the days of spring,” said Lynn Mickey, PTA President. “The PTA is doing its part in fighting childhood obesity by promoting healthy eating and physical activity starting at the elementary level. Healthy bodies and healthy minds go hand in hand.”
Prizes were donated by local businesses, including Panera Bread, Fizek, the Scrappers, Skate Zone, Anguillis Greenhouse, Huffman’s Fruit Farm, White House Fruit Farms, Austintown Bounce and the Lloyd Elementary PTA.
