Boardman Glenwood Middle School held its annual Relay for Life Dodge Ball Tournament to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life event in Boardman.

Students in fifth through eighth grades could participate by forming teams of 12 players. Each team was asked to raise $48 as an entry fee to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Over the course of a week, the teams in each grade level played one another to determine a champion for each grade. The champion from each grade level held a playoff May 18 to determine which team would be the school champions.

The final elimination game came down to the sixth-grade team, the Cobras, playing the eighth-grade team, Squirrels Gone Wild.

The Cobras’s determination resulted in a 2-0 upset victory over the Squirrels Gone Wild. The Cobras went on to lose to the faculty team.

The American Cancer Society was the real winner with BGMS donating $3,484 from the tournament as well as additional fundraising incentives.

“This was a record year of raising funds for the American Cancer Society, our students and faculty are proud to support such a worthy cause,” said Principal Tony Alvino.
