Prevention study

The American Cancer Society’s Epidemiology Research Program is seeking men and women between age 30 and 65 years who have no personal history of cancer (this does not include basal or squamous cell skin cancer) to fight back against cancer by enrolling in the American Cancer Society Cancer Prevention Study SEmD 3 (CPS-3).

Study-enrollment opportunities will take place at various venues in select communities across the United States and Puerto Rico.

In the Northeast Ohio Region, three Relay For Life events will enroll participants June 18. The locations and enrollment hours are: Relay For Life of Canton, Canton Central Catholic High School Stadium, 4824 West Tuscarawas, Canton, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.; Relay For Life of Steubenville, Indian Creek High School, Robert S. Kettlewell Stadium, 200 Park Drive, Wintersville, 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.; Relay For Life of Westside Akron/Summit, Copley High School Track, 3807 Ridgewood Road, Copley, 6:30 to 10:30 p.m.

CPS-3 enrollment takes about 30 to 60 minutes and typically involves reading and signing an informed consent form; completing a survey; providing some physical measurements, such as waist size, weight, height, blood pressure and heart rate, and providing a small blood sample.

Bell invitation

YOUNGSTOWN

Breen O. Bannon, vice president, sales executive, Huntington Insurance, was at the New York Stock Exchange on May 28 to attend the ringing of the opening bell. Breen was asked to attend by ALS-TDI, a research group for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The invitation to ring the bell stems from Team Bannon’s efforts last summer when Bannon and family members were part of a fund-raising and awareness event called the Tri-State Trek, which included a bicycle ride from Boston to New York to benefit ALS-TDI.

Breen lost his brother, Chuck, to ALS on April 18, 2009, at the age of 44.

Team Bannon, consisting of Breen, his sister, Lisa, and his sister-in-law, Elaine, raised more than $23,000 for research by riding in the Tri-State Trek.
