Local golfer wins youth golf tournament

CANTON

Jacinta Pikunas, 11, of Youngstown, won the season-ending event on the U.S. Kids Golf tour with a nine-hole score of 32 at Prestwick Country Club recently.

The event was one of seven on the Canton Spring Local Tour.

Local center accepting kickball applications

The Jewish Community Center on Gypsy Lane is now accepting single and team registration to play outdoor kickball at its facility.

Teams will be broken into groups of 10 to 15 people. Games will be held outside in the backyard of the center Sundays beginning July 11th through August 29th.

Eagles’ Marlin Jackson tears Achilles’ tendon

PHILADELPHIA

Eagles defensive back Marlin Jackson, a Sharon, Pa. native, has ruptured his right Achilles’ tendon an indoor practice.

Jackson, who was competing for a starting spot at free safety, was hurt on Tuesday. An MRI exam revealed the extent of the injury, the team said.

O’Brien hired as PAC associate director

WEXFORD, Pa.

The Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) has hired Shannon O’Brien as Associate Director of the conference, effective August 1, 2010.

The PAC Associate Director position is a two-year (2010-12) position funded primarily through the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority & Women’s Internship Grant program.

St. Bonaventure’s Eleby leaves program

OLEAN, N.Y.

St. Bonaventure officials say starting point guard Malcolm Eleby, one of four players charged in connection with a stabbing earlier this year, has left the basketball program.

Head coach Mark Schmidt said Eleby, of Philadelphia, won’t return for his senior season in 2010-11.

Caroline Hedwall of Oklahoma State has won the Honda Sports Award for golf.

The Honda Award is given annually to the top female athlete in each of 12 NCAA sports.

SEC considering tweak in basketball format

SANDESTIN, Fla.

The Southeastern Conference is considering tweaking its men’s basketball format.

The league is looking at possibly scrapping its divisions and putting all 12 teams together for the regular season. It also might keep the divisions and seed the teams Nos. 1 through 12 for the postseason tournament.

Meyer diagnosed with esophageal spasms

SANDESTIN, Fla.

Florida coach Urban Meyer says chest pain that bothered him the last three years has been diagnosed as esophageal spasms.

Speaking at the Southeastern Conference’s annual spring meetings, Meyer says doctors have him on medication and he feels fine. He declined to discuss his health in further detail, but says his heart is completely healthy.

Divers get a glimpse of safer Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y.

NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers Jeff Gordon, Jeff Burton, and Marcos Ambrose have completed the first half of a two-day tire test at Watkins Glen International, which has been altered to improve safety.

The changes at Watkins Glen include the removal of gravel traps and grass, the installation of a SAFER — Steel and Foam Energy Reduction — barriers, and relocated guard rails.
