Lincoln Chapter 89 marks AHEPA Day
BOARDMAN
The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, Lincoln Chapter 89 of Mahoning County, joined 900 chapters across the United States and Canada in observing AHEPA Day on May 16.
The chapter chose the occasion to recognize the contributions of key members of the Youngstown area Greek community.
“Maintain the Values and Spirit of Your Hellenic Heritage” was the theme for the event, which began with members attending a 10:30 a.m. liturgy at St. John the Forerunner Church in Boardman, St. Nicholas Church in Youngstown or Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church in Campbell.
James Denney, chapter president, said, “The perpetuation of Helleism, community service and philanthropy are the prime goals of AHEPA.” He pointed out that a food drive for the hungry during the past holiday season and the sponsorship of the Apo Torosyan documentary “The Morganthau Story” were among the group’s most recent efforts to further these goals.
The Order of AHEPA was founded in Atlanta, Ga., in 1922 for the purpose of assisting all immigrants of Greek descent to achieve American citizenship through individual city chapters or schools of instruction. Chapter meetings encouraged members to actively participate in the civic life of their communities.
