EDINBORO, Pa.

The dean of Youngstown State University’s Beeghly College of Education is leaving the university to take on the role of provost and vice president for academic affairs at Edinboro University beginning July 1.

“I really do leave with mixed feelings. I love this place,” Dr. Philip Ginnetti said. It was a hard decision, but it’s a great opportunity, he added.

Ginnetti was selected after a national search, said Jeremy D. Brown, Edinboro president. He will succeed Pearl Bartelt, who retired from Edinboro earlier this year.

Ginnetti will be responsible for oversight of all Edinboro University schools and related academic activities in coordination with the office of the president.

He will direct all undergraduate and graduate instructional programs and foster academic partnerships between the university and other academic institutions. Additionally, he will provide leadership in the globalization of university curricula.

Ginnetti earned both a bachelor’s degree (elementary education) and master’s degree (education) from YSU, and earned a doctorate (elementary education curriculum) from the University of Akron.

The majority of Ginnetti’s academic career has been spent at his alma mater, beginning in 1985 when he joined YSU as adjunct faculty.

He has had several positions at the institution, including chairman of the department of teacher education and assistant dean of the Beeghly College of Education. He has been dean of the college and professor in the department of teacher education for the past eight years.

His commitment to outreach and partnership development resulted in the creation of the Youngstown Early College, which received an “excellent” rating from the Ohio Department of Education.

A YSU spokesman said the university plans to appoint in interim dean and conduct a national search for Ginnetti’s replacement.
